Almost forgot to post today!!! But then I remembered and thought of the Trivium presentation on Unplugged Mom I re-listened to this weekend and wanted to share a clip from Jan Irvin that really resonates with me. Irvin really explains the trivium and quadrivium in a way that makes more sense to me than anything I have heard in YEARS! If you haven't had a chance to hear, watch or read his materials - TAKE THE TIME TO!!!

Home Education: Between the Extremes
This video is FABULOUS!
I can't tell you how many conversations I have had to walk away from - IRL and online - when the topics of labels gets brought up. Whether it is educational labels, spiritual labels, nutritional labels - WHATEVER. Why do people have to get so angry when someone makes a choose that is varied from theirs? Why do some people feel compelled to impress their beliefs on others as the one and only path? Why do LABELS have the power to tear apart friendships?

Regulation in Home Education
I had to share this incredible installment of the Unplugged Mom Radio show on Regulation in Home Education. CLICK HERE FOR THE 1/28 BROADCAST.
Here is an excerpt from my email that she speaks of during the show -
I have been meaning to contact you about something I heard on one of the archive shows and I keep forgetting to do it, but after hearing about your speaker for next week, I wanted to be sure to get a question in ahead of time as I am not sure I can be up that early...we are just not morning people in the winter.
So anyway, I was listening to the archives and I heard Desiree's comment about Massachusetts laws being so strict. As a board member of our state homeschooling organization I hear from people all the time who are concerned because they are moving here or are thinking about homeschooling here. We are constantly listed as a "very difficult state to homeschool in", so I am curious why people feel that our state is such a difficult one. I have heard from some that it is just the fact that we are an "approval" state, but the thing that a lot of people don't seem to realize is that though this is true, there are no "laws" or "homeschooling regulations" here. The guidelines that are followed are based on case laws and therefore are up for interpretation. I also think it has a lot to do with people's intimidation of authority figures and a lack of willingness to bump the system, even if only by standing up for their own rights. So my question for the constitutional expert would be "From a constitutional standpoint, why would Massachusetts be considered a strict homeschooling state?"
I was very impressed with this show and the connections that were made for me are profound!

Stop the Madness - Incredible Video
This video brought me to tears. My friends and I were in the generation at the beginning of this craziness! We were given label upon label and many of us often wonder WHERE we would be if we hadn't been. We have friends that AREN'T around, is it because their dreams were squashed? Because they were told they needed to be fixed? Because they were told they weren't good enough? Because they were CHANGED into what others wanted them to be?
Stop labeling children! Start supporting the incredible things that make us all individuals!

Becoming Unplugged
Unplugged Parenting...Unplugged Education...I have been coming across these terms a lot lately, at first I thought what are they unplugging from? However as I have researched I have begun to realize that there ARE others out there that have the same ideas as I do.
I have been bouncing around the cybersphere trying to find that little niche that feels right. Where I can read something and think to myself “EXACTLY!” It can be rather difficult with all the labels floating here, there, and everywhere that can seem to mean one thing, but as you look deeper it turns out that most of the people there don't actually “feel” or “think” the way you had thought they would.
From what I have gathered, in this philosphy “unplugged” means breaking away from the mainstream. Moving away from the traditions that we perpetuate because they are habits and not because we believe that they are right. Here is the clearest list that I have come across -
Unplugged parenting includes:
•Unplugging from Mainstream 'standards'
•Freeing yourself from others ideas of what happiness is
•Kids Self Esteem & sense of inner peace are very important to you
•Education of the whole child is of highest priority
•Holistic Parenting is the center and mainstay of life
•Natural Living
•You live by Homegrown Values
•You live out-of-the-box and are truly authentic
