Lots of Fun at the Children's Museum

We went to the Children's Museum in Boston today and the kids had a wonderful time!

They played with bubbles...

Climbed across a wall...

This one would have made Noni proud...

Worked out and measured their heart rates...

Found a phone...but the call was apparently for someone else!

Worked on some cool equipment...

Went grocery shopping...

Found another phone...this call was for her!

Planted rice in nice straight rows...
I would have to say that the favorite section of the day was the
Air Play Area!

KM liked the tube drums and
SC liked the pinwheels (of course)!
It was a wonderful day of "PLAY" at the museum!

shhh...don't tell her she may have learned something!

Massachusetts Children's Book Award

Our wonderful new children's librarian just email me a link to this year's list of nominated titles and there are some GREAT ones included!

Take a look here or at the official site here. The majority of libraries in the state will be having sign-ups, but even if yours isn't this is a great resource for extremely well written and engaging books!

If you are unaware of the program here is how it works -

Kids in grades 4, 5 & 6 (aprox. 9 - 12 year olds) must read 5 books from this list by March 1st and choose their favorite. Votes will be tallied by local librarians and sent to Salem State College. The winner will be announced on April 3rd!

Where are the kids...

Can you find them?

We went to the playground today on our way home from coop classes and the kids had the whole place to themselves! It was wonderful! I didn't have to remind them once to slow down for the little ones or to watch where they were going! They could go at full force and had a blast!

Sunday Afternoon in the Kitchen

I spend most Sundays in the kitchen and today was no different!
However I didn't spend the afternoon baking goodies like I normally do,
I spent it making fingerpaint.

KM attends a bi-weekly art club with some other local homeschoolers and really enjoys it! Last week while she was doing her Creativity Express Art Program there was a lesson on making paint and she thought it would be a great thing to do with the other girls at Art Club this week, so I spent the afternoon trying to get the recipes to work. - I wanted her to be able to do it for the first time with the other girls. - There were several different ones, but for some reason the consistency just would not come out right on some of the more complex ones. Then I turned to the basic recipe that I had done hundreds of times at my old job - 1 part cold water to 1 part flour, add some food coloring and Presto - completely safe, non-toxic, totally edible fingerpaint!

This recipe always seems to work! Sometimes the simple route is the best route!

However if anyone else decides to try out the other recipes I linked to above, please let me know if there are any tricks that I may have missed!

A little space...

for the little learner.

We have an area, off the kitchen, just outside the laundry area and in between the playroom and KM's bedroom, that has always been a bit useless. Until today when CJ took an extra piece of the new counter from the kitchen and made a little desk/shelf out of it.

It is just the right height to rest the laundry basket on
or for SC to pull her stool up to and do some coloring.

ALL CUDDLED UP!

Really...is there anything else to say!

VASCULAR PLANTS EXPERIMENT

his was one of the simplest, yet coolest experiments we have done in a long time.

We cut out paper flowers...folded the petals up
Then dropped them in the water

Here is what happened:

Stomping Through Leaves

on a wonderful Fall day! What could be more fun!

We went exploring at a local preservation spot and found some really cool things...

Like 2 branches growing around a rock that was wedged in between.
It has been there for so long that the rock will barely wiggle.

A little rock bridge over a very pretty stream.

Two ducks having a conversation.

LOTS AND LOTS of shelf mushrooms. KM became fascinated with these on a hike a few years ago and every time she seems them she takes more pics.

It's Back!!!!

And I missed it sooooooo much!!!!

pro·duc·tiv·i·ty

Noun
Definition:

1. rate of production: the rate at which a company produces goods or services, in relation to the amount of materials and number of employees needed
2. ability to produce: the ability to be productive

This is a word that has been being discussed a LOT lately around here. From the kitchen remodeling, to the chaotic situations that have put our "normal" life on a hold a bit, to the economics coop class that KM is take to prepare herself for another visit to Exchange City.
This word was mentioned again today, by a father who just does not want to grasp the concept of natural consequences for his child. He has been working around the house for the past week and I think the cabin fever is beginning to get to him already.

Here was the situation:
KM took an EXTREMELY long time getting herself together this morning, she couldn't make a decision on which cereal to eat, she was allowing SC to distract her every chance she got, was picking out "just the right outfit" for a day when we were not planning on leaving the house and just generally dawdling about her business as most 11 year old girls tend to do from time to time.

Things like this don't really bother me on days when I know that we don't have anywhere to be, but for some reason CJ just can not stand this dilly dally behavior. He just kept prodding her along until I finally pulled him aside and had to explain to him again that no matter how long it takes her to do her work, she will get all of the work done today.

There are days that she gets everything done in under an hour - generally on days there is something SHE wants to do planned - then there are days when it takes her four hours to get the exact same amount of work done - these are generally days when we HAVE to be somewhere that I need to be. Regardless of the amount of time she will get all of the assigned work completed.

I am always with in earshot of her and if she needs help I jump right in there to point her in the direction she needs to go in, but I do not stand over her. She wants to be independent, she wants to learn most of these things on her own, so that is how her morning work is done - I give her the morning daily assignments and she does them as I go about playing with SC or getting my daily cleaning, baking, work and what not stuff done.

When she has completed her morning things she has free time to go on the computer, play with SC, work on an afternoon assignment or just do whatever until after lunch. Then in the afternoon we work on one or more of the following topics - either Literature, Science, Social Studies/History or an elective - art, music, Spanish, current events, etc - together. I try to keep the lighter fun things for when SC is there as she really likes to participate with us for art, music and Spanish. History and Science is saved for two of the three afternoons that we don't have SC so that we can really focus on what we are studying and can get engulfed in it. When we are done with that KM is done for the day.

Therefore if KM chooses to not focus and get her work done, she does not have as much free time. This is the natural consequence for the behavior. As I was explaining all this to CJ, KM came by and handed me her completed work and said "See Daddy if my productivity drops, I don't get to have the benefit of a friend coming over this afternoon. Since there is no Public School today, I can probably have a whole afternoon visit!"

CJ was shocked. In the amount of time it had taken me to explain to him how this all works, KM had finished her entire math reading and practice assignment. She was totally done for the day.

She also told us that when she was putting the date in her daily notebook she remembered that it was Veteran's Day and her neighborhood friends would be home - see there was a benefit for her to be productive! I know for sure know she FINALLY understands the concept and I think he may be getting it as well!

Happy Veterans Day!

Thank you to all the men and women who are and have served for our country! We are very proud of all our family members who are veterans! We will never forget the sacrifices that you have made for us!

The paint is on the walls...

but none of us are really sure that we like it!
Luckily the painter lives here - hehe - and is amongst those unsure of the color!

Though the pictures don't really do the shade any justice - I must say that we (KM & I) did not have nice words for the color when we walked in the door. I did not pick it in the first place, but I am also one of those people that has to get used to all color changes - except for the purplish shades of course.
We will have to wait and see, in about a week, what the final decision will be.

Should Have Known!

I saw this quiz on another Homeschooling Mom's Blog - Here - and had to try it out for myself - of course I should have known what the answer would be!!!

You Are a Witch (or Warlock)

You are deviously brilliant and a perfect manipulator.

You somehow always end up getting what you want - without anyone knowing you're working behind the scenes.

Crafty and cunning, you can work your way out of any jam.

And it's easy for you to get people to do what you want, whether you're working for good or evil.

Your greatest power: Mind control

Your greatest weakness: Making people your puppets

You play well with: Ghosts

What Kind of Monster Are You?

If you take the quiz, come back and let me know what kind of monster you are...

Almost there -

Things have finally gotten back to a bit of a more normal rhythm around here, so I should be back to more of the usual "homeschooly" postings that are normally around here.

We will be using a lot of the leftover and extra construction materials and packaging for some really cool art and science projects so I will be sure to share those as they happen!

Thanks to all who have been patiently stopping by during this slow blogging, but chaotic family time!!!

YIPPEEE - I have running water!

I woke up this morning to a nearly completed kitchen.
I LOVE my new sink...

and the stove is WONDERFUL.
I am dealing with the shortened counter on the opposite wall.

And will post the final pictures once my painter (CJ of course) has finished.
